How the ISO 1100 x 1100 fit is worked out

The 1100 x 1100 mm pallet is the ISO / Asian square pallet, the dominant footprint across Japan, Korea and much of Southeast Asia. Because it is square, the two flat orientations of a box give the same count unless the box itself is square, so the pattern depends only on how the box length and width divide into 1100 mm. This calculator lays boxes flat on the deck, takes the better orientation, then stacks identical layers to a target height.

Per layer:

boxes per layer = max( floor(1100 / boxL) x floor(1100 / boxW), floor(1100 / boxW) x floor(1100 / boxL) )

The pallet is about 140 mm tall, so a 1200 mm total load leaves roughly 1060 mm of box stack:

layers = floor(usable height / boxH) and total = boxes per layer x layers.

Worked example (page defaults)

Using the defaults of a 35 x 30 x 25 cm carton (350 x 300 x 250 mm) on the ISO 1100 x 1100:

  • Orientation A: floor(1100 / 350) x floor(1100 / 300) = 3 x 3 = 9 cartons per layer
  • Orientation B: floor(1100 / 300) x floor(1100 / 350) = 3 x 3 = 9 cartons per layer
  • Best layer = 9 cartons (9 x 350 x 300 = 945,000 mm2 of the 1.21 m2 deck, about 78% floor use because square pallets leave edge strips).
  • Height: 1060 / 250 = 4 layers.
  • Total = 9 x 4 = 36 cartons, with a load height of 140 + (4 x 250) = 1140 mm.

A square deck tends to leave matching strips on two edges with rectangular cartons, so floor use is often lower than on a rectangular pallet of similar area. This is a single-orientation estimate that does not interlock courses or rotate individual boxes. Compare the rectangular alternative in the Industrial 1200 x 1000 calculator, check the layer pattern in the TI-HI calculator, or start over in the main pallet calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the 1100 x 1100 mm pallet used?
The 1100 x 1100 mm ISO pallet is the standard square pallet across much of Asia, including Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. It is sized to fit two-across in marine containers.
How many 35 x 30 x 25 cm cartons fit on an ISO 1100 x 1100 pallet?
9 cartons per layer in a 3 x 3 pattern, and 4 layers within a 1200 mm load height, for 36 cartons total at a stack height of about 1140 mm.
Why is floor use lower on a square 1100 x 1100 pallet?
A square deck leaves matching leftover strips on two edges when you tile rectangular cartons. With the 350 x 300 mm carton, the 3 x 3 layer uses about 78% of the deck; a box sized closer to a divisor of 1100 mm would fill more.
Does box orientation matter on a square pallet?
Less than on a rectangular pallet. Because both deck sides are 1100 mm, rotating the box 90 degrees gives the same per-layer count unless the box footprint is itself square or hits a different divisor, so the calculator reports the same 9 either way here.
